Rare 19th-century French Faux Bamboo Semanier Chest

£1,395.00Price

A rare late 19th-century French faux-bamboo semainier commode, beautifully crafted in warm, richly patinated pine and distinguished by its elegant proportions, intricate carved detailing, and unmistakable Chinoiserie influence.

Made in c1880, this charming seven-drawer chest reflects the European fascination with Asian decorative arts and the fashionable bamboo-inspired furniture that became particularly popular in France during the second half of the 19th century.

Constructed in beautifully grained pine it has distinctive faux-bamboo carving applied and also painted faux bamboo on the drawers.

There is some old traces of woodworm but mainly in the faux bamboo application and paint.

The chest features seven generously proportioned drawers, each fitted with a central keyhole. There is also a hidden drawer in the base. There is one available key and all the drawers run smoothly.
